We are pleased to announce that National Science Foundation (NSF) will support Phase II of our UPRM CREST: Nanotechnology Center for Biomedical, Environmental and Sustainability Applications.The grant award was made for $5,000,000/5 years.

The Center executive committee members are professors O. Marcelo Suárez (PI, General Engineering), Arturo J. Hernández-Maldonado (Co-PI, Chemical Engineering), Madeline Torres-Lugo (CoPI, Chemical Engineering), Agnes Padovani (CoPI, General Engineering) y Oscar Perales-Pérez (CoPI, General Engineering). More than 20 faculty members of the UPRM, most of them from College of Engineering, will be spearheading the Center’s research and education activities. Upon completion of Phase I of the Center, which is scheduled to end in August 2014 after a total budget of $5,200,000, Phase 2 represents the largest active NSF grant ever awarded to UPRM.

This seminar will cover some of the most significant challenges found in the design of nanoporous materials, both rigid and flexible, that are tailored for life support systems in space applications. The presentation will show how it is possible to assemble, from the bottom-up, nanoporous adsorbents that are suitable to capture carbon dioxide from space cabins while lowering its concentration to the levels necessary to properly sustain long-term missions, including the exploration of Mars. In addition, since future space missions will use carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and even power, the seminar will also show how it is possible to store and deliver carbon dioxide using nanoporous materials without compromising much of the available energy or resources.

NanoMes in Public Schools

In March & April NanoDays will be celebrated on middle and high schools in the Western regional of Puerto Rico.

NanoDays is a national effort coordinated by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education (NISE) Network. The main goal is to inform and educate the community about Nanoscale Science or, just, Nanoscience and its applications.

Marcos Corchado, Mechanical Engineering senior student, continues his wont of winning awards. His work titled "Effects of Boron and Zinc on Impact Tests of Al-Zn-B Alloy" received the 2nd Place in the poster competition held as part of the Student Professional Development buy cialis now Conference (SPDC) of District A of the American Society of cialis Mechanical Engineers ASME. This SPDC was held on the campus of New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, NY on April 26 and 27, 2013. This work was co-authored by Fernando Reyes, Industrial Engineering student and the moment of this article in a co-op at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, under the supervision of Prof. O. Marcelo Suárez.

A CREST Tradition: Top-Notch Students Win Prizes PDF Print E-mail

Keeping the Center's tradition of high competitiveness and high-achievement, two CREST undergraduate students received prizes during the Science & Technology Symposium held in the Mayagüez campus of the University of Puerto Rico on April 16, 2013. The symposium was co-hosted by the Sacnas UPRM Chapter, the IEEE UPRM Branch, and the university's Hemispheric Center Cohemis. José Moreno Quiles, senior Mechanical Engineering student won the First Place in the Poster Category for his work titled "Processing, Characterization and Optimization of Mechanical Properties of an Al/NbB2 Composite," which was co-authored by Neshma López Meléndez, Chemical Engineering student. Additionally Seaska Pérez Avilés, Civil Engineering undergraduate, received the Second Place in the Oral Presentation Category for her work titled "Characterization and Tortuosity Index Formulation of a Polyimide Foam for Aerospace Applications," which was co-authored by Sugeily Flores Bonano (Mechanical Engineering graduate student).

Both students work under the supervision of Prof. O. Marcelo Suárez. Seaska's project is part of Sugeily Flores' research, which is also funded by the Puerto Rico Space Grant Consortium, and is co-supervised by Prof. Walter Silva.

Outstanding CREST Alumnus Receives NSF Graduate Fellowship PDF Print E-mail


The National Science Foundation announced the recipients of the 2013 Graduate Research Fellowships. As in 2012, another UPRM CREST alumnus receives this prestigious award: Rafael Soler Crespo. In June 2012 Rafael graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Chemical Engineering and received the Luis Monzón award from his academic department. As an undergraduate he worked with CREST Professors O. Marcelo Suárez and María Curet. In 2011 he obtained the First Prize in the undergraduate poster competition held in the Materials Science & Technology Conference and in 2012 he won the First Prize in the undergraduate contest of the TMS Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division. Currently Rafael pursues a doctoral degree in Applied Mechanics in Northwestern University under the guidance of Professor Horacio Espinoza.
