On November 8th, Sonia L. Aviles-Barreto won second place in the Poster Competition of the Materials Science and Engineering Division (MESD) of the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sonia is a member of CREST IRG4 completing her Ph.D. at the Department of Chemical Engineering under the supervision of Dr. David Suleiman. The overall goal of the research is to develop new low-cost, durable proton exchange membranes (PEM) with higher selectivity and proton conductivities to develop and enhance the performance of energy efficient devices as fuel cells and hydrogen gas sensors. Their specific objective is to be able to functionalize ionomers with sulfonic groups, cation substitution and additives to produce selective membranes for these applications.
