The 2010 annual External Advisory Group Meeting will take place on January 22, 2010. The four-member external advisory group integrated by Prof. Lynn M. Walker, Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Nick Hutson, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. John E. E. Baglin, Research Staff Member Emeritus, IBM Almaden Research Center, and Ms. Elizabeth Troche-Cordero, Regional Director of the Puerto Rico Department of Education for the Mayaguez Region, will evaluate the Center’s progress in research, education, outreach, and human resources development towards its overall objectives.

Medical science is the area where active nanotechnologies are having an incomparable impact. On a therapy basis, the emerging cancer treatment based on the photodynamic therapy (PDT) approach could fully modify the way how semiconductor Quantum Dots (QDs) would be used by promoting the singlet oxygen yield, responsible for killing of cancer cells, by using QDs alone or combined with conventional photo-sensitizers (PS), opens new possibilities for transformative research in cancer therapy.

IRG1: Multifunctional Nanoparticles for Magnetically Actuated siRNA Delivery PDF Print E-mail

This Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) proposes to develop heterogeneous multifunctional nanoparticles with a magnetic core and a thermoresponsive block copolymer coating, suitable for the magnetically actuated delivery of siRNA to cells. Monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles will be prepared by thermal decomposition of organometallic precursors and coated with A-B block copolymers.

IRG3: Nanoporous Materials for Gas Separation and Multifunctional Catalysis PDF Print E-mail

Future applications of porous materials require novel ones with designed morphology (e.g., pore shape and volume) and predetermined surface properties. The pore distribution and nature of interaction between the porous host and its guest sorbate is directly correlated to the ability to achieve a desired function in a particular application. Hence, a bottom-up synthetic approach at the nano-scale via templated and functionalization mechanisms is needed to tailor the final materials properties.
