Dr. Demetrios Kazakos, Program Manager of the CREST Program (Human Resource Development Division of NSF Directorate of Education and Human Resources), completed an official site visit to our Nanotechnology Center on Wednesday November 24, 2010. Prior to his visit to campus, Dr. Kazakos met with UPRM Chancellor, Dr. Miguel A. Muñoz, and UPRM-CREST Director, Dr. Marcelo Suarez, to discuss the administration role in sustaining the Center’s success and the existing opportunities for the Center and UPRM within the Foundation.

During the site visit all five groups of the Center presented their progress, accomplishments and future plans. The presentations were led by the Interdisciplinary Education Group (IEG) who discussed the vast outreach and educational activities carried out. The technical presentations were organized in two sets: The morning was dedicated to the Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs) dedicated to energy applications and systems, i.e. IRGs 3 & 4, while in the afternoon the IRGs dedicated to biomedical applications, i.e. IRGs 1 & 2, discussed their activities.

Dr. Kazakos wrapped up the presentations with a summary of his assessment of the status of the Center and recommendations about available funding within the Foundation and other external sources. He highlighted the tremendous growth experienced by the Center in the second year and the quality of the research conducted. A special recognition was given to the IEG’s work: “None of the other CRESTs has such an impressive outreach program.”

After a brief visit to a nearby laboratory, Dr. Kazakos met with CREST students.
